Celebrating Italian excellence, the new FENDI exhibition

FENDI has always distinguished itself by its attention to detail and appreciation for Italian savoir-faire to pay a heartfelt tribute to these artists and their creations and celebrate handicrafts. FENDI presents the temporary exhibition Hand in Hand at the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana in Rome.

Hand in hand was unveiled in 2020, but its constant evolution supports the society created with artists from all over Italy to highlight the beauty of the iconic Baguette bag. An icon designed by the Artistic Director of Accessories, and menswear, Silvia Venturini Fendi, in 1997. 

This Fendi classic has since become a prized accessory among connoisseurs and an extraordinary canvas in which the creativity and skills of Italian artists and artisans have been overwhelmed to reinterpret this iconic figure piece.

The hand-in-hand creative initiative has invited a select group of workshops and groups to reinterpret the Baguette and apply their talents to transform this traditional piece into a magnificent work of art.

Hand-in-hand symbolizes the encounter local artisans hands’ with those of the artists and artisans of FENDI to give life to a unique collaboration where techniques and values merge to create extraordinary pieces. Together they create a network to preserve the creativity, knowledge, and traditions of local artisans. The results of these interventions are as diverse as they are opulent, from the extravagance of precious metals and stones, intricate mosaics, the purity of cotton, and complex embroidery, to the beauty of carefully treated leather.

On the ground floor of the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, FENDI presents the first selection of twenty pieces of Baguette’s hand-in-hand creations, each one created in a different province of the country, in collaboration with its best local artisans.

The invited regions are: Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardia, Marche, Molise, Piemonte, Puglia, Sardegna, Sicily, Tuscany, Trentino-Alto Adige, Umbria, Valle d’Aosta and Veneto.

The museography presents an exquisite mix between the digital and the physical to create a unique experience that shares the crafting process of the project in a historical and cultural narrative.

Enjoy images projected on LED screens from floor to ceiling. Marvel at the marble floor of the Palazzo della Civilità Italiana and its reflections of scenes of extraordinary skill and patience in which artists create sketches and prepare materials to apply ancient techniques and reveal secrets dating back generations of artists.

The exhibition focuses on an array of thirty-meter long multimedia workshop tables where immersive simulation of a workshop in which each Baguette displays. As well as the materials and tools used to create them. Weaving, embroidery, silversmithing, marquetry, and many other skills reveal in video series integrated into each station to take the viewer on a journey through Italy and its family workshops.
