After months of rumors and reports, Formula 1 has officially announced that Audi will join the 2026 World Championship season as a power unit supplier. The new power unit regulations for the 2026 season will keep the current V6 internal combustion engines and switch to 100 percent sustainable fuels with an electric power increase
With F1 looking to become Net Zero Carbon by 2030, Audi cites forward-thinking changes as paramount in its decision to join the motorsport series.
With Audi Sports operations based in Neuburg, it will be the first in over a decade that an F1 powertrain gets built in Germany. As a new manufacturer, Audi promises to announce its decision on which team it will partner with by the end of the year. Early reports indicate that it is most likely McLaren.
“Given the significant technological advances that the category is making towards sustainability in 2026, we can speak of a new Formula 1. Formula 1 is transforming itself, and Audi wants to support this journey. A close link between our Formula 1 project and the Technical Development department of AUDI AG will enable synergies,” writes Oliver Hoffmann, Member of the Audi Technical Development Board of Management.
