Supporting folk art in Mexico is the mission and purpose of the patronage of the Association of Friends of the Museum of Popular Art, A.C and its ambassadors and friends. Their work is motivated by the noble intention of giving folk artisans and artists the social and economic recognition they so richly deserve. The members of the board of trustees and friends of the MAP create a myriad of activities, programs, and experiences to invite the general public to participate – through tax-deductible donations- that allow them to be part of splendid activities for the benefit of the museum, the artisans and their programs.
With this intention, the Sensory Experiences event took place on January 25 with the participation of the dancer and actor Isaac Hernández, the Mexican designer Iván Ávalos, the director Rodrigo Díaz, the founders of Mesa Viva, and the Mexican perfume Xinú, among other great sponsors and personalities.
Each experience stimulated one of the senses. The first stop was HEAR in the auditorium of the Museum of Popular Art. The virtuoso, Rodrigo Díaz, delighted the attendees with two cello musical pieces. Before his presentation, attendees enjoyed a brief and engaging video presentation narrated by actress Cecilia Suaréz, an ambassador for the museum.
Afterward, we move on to TOUCH in Room 4. At that hall, Mexican designer Iván Ávalos, along with the artisans of Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo -and the participation of Xa’lly- showed a show full of textures and fashion. You can still get to know since it is on display as Piece of the Month.
Iván Ávalos, inspired by the patron saint festivities of Ixmiquilpan, created an imposing design with a non-religious touch, despite seeming that it is a crowned virgin. The materials used were tule, jute, ixtle, and wax. With this exhibition, the designer intends for the artisans to receive more than monetary recognition and acknowledgment for their creative process. He invites audiences to visit the Museum of Popular Art since the dress is the Piece of the Month.
Then, it was time to please TASTE. This room was in charge of MesaViva, Bonanimo, Chocolates Caratti, Café Vía Corta, Tequila Volcán and Local Trendy. The guests learned about the process of coffee, tequila, and spices from their origin to the final product. Leaving the room, they tasted tequila plus spices, coffee, and chocolate to identify the processes through flavors.
The SMELL was in charge of Xinú in collaboration with the artisan Constantino Patron González from Olinalá, Guerrero. The perfume caps got intervened by hand with the technique of make and lacquer.
The cherry on such an exquisite cake was for the sense of SIGHT by the renowned Mexican dancer and actor Isaac Hernández. Who delighted the attendees with a warm-up routine.
Three groups had the opportunity to live the experience. The final one tasted a three-course meal prepared by Chef Pablo Carrera, creator of Catamundi.
Among the attendees were, on behalf of the AmigosMAP Board of Trustees, Marie Thérèse Hermand de Arango, Cecilia Barbará de Moctezuma, Viviana Corcuera, Zaira Marino, Mercedes Noriega and Sonya Santos, as well as Nina Zapata, Esperanza Alanis, Maureen Spilk, Marinela Servitje, Bárbara Herrera and many more endearing friends of the patronage.
It is worth mentioning that the healthy distance protocols and the safety and hygiene measures were always respected and carried out. As well as, remember that folk art is a reflection of the natural and cultural wealth of our country, a perfect reminder of the things we must preserve. The AmigosMAPs contribute to the well-being of artisans and their communities through actions inside and outside the museum.
Stay tuned to learn more about their programs, and don’t miss the next opportunity to support AmigosMAP.
