Brassus’ Savoir-Faire is coming to New York’s High Line this June, thanks to Audemars Piguet Contemporary, High Line Art, and artist Meriem Bennani.
Audemars Piguet has empowered generations of highly talented artisans to constantly develop new techniques and skills, expand their know-how to set trends, and share their passion with watch enthusiasts worldwide through the language of emotions. In addition, it has promoted enriching exchanges between various creative fields and has inspired the community to create projects such as Audemars Piguet Contemporary.
Audemars Piguet Contemporary commissions contemporary works from international artists, thus promoting a global community of creators. The brand believes in the power of Contemporary Art as a catalyst for connections. One of its aspects is the Audemars Piguet Studio, hand in hand with its curatorial team, allowing artists to undertake ambitious creations with proposals of different dimensions and media that encourage them to explore new territories in their artistic activity. The other is the Audemars Piguet Artistic Committee, the brand’s biennial competition, which selects an artist not yet internationally recognized for the development of a large-scale art piece together with a guest curator.
Next June, the artist Meriem Bennani will unveil her first public sculpture, Windy (2022), a joint commission from High Line Art and Audemars Piguet Contemporary. The sculpture will be installed at the High Line location, on New York’s 24th Street, until May 2023.
Windy is the first public sculpture commissioned and curated collaboratively by High Line Art and Audemars Piguet Contemporary.
In an encounter of magical realism, grotesque humor, and techniques widely varying from moving image genres, Bennani creates videos -often projected inside colorful geometric steel sculptures- that tell stories about human behavior and our experience both face-to-face and digital.
Exhibited at the High Line location, Windy will represent a change in Bennani’s trajectory in that it will be his first stand-alone public sculpture without any video elements.
Directly inspired by the experience of living in New York and walking the High Line, Windy retains the artist’s trademark absurd humor and interest in animation while focusing on the mechanics and kinetic energy of the sculpture itself.
The High Line Art and the Audemars Piguet Contemporary curating teams work closely with Bennani on the creation process. The collaboration highlights the parallel mission of each program: to invite an artist to create a newly commissioned piece of art that propels them to think outside the box and amplify their work to a new dimension.
Since its founding in 2009, High Line Art commissions and produces myriads of artistic pieces, including specific works for its installations, exhibitions, video programs, and a performance lineup.
The arts program invites artists to explore ways to dialog the exceptional architecture, history, and design of the park. Establish a productive interaction with the neighborhood and the urban landscape. Directed by Cecilia Alemani, Director, and Donald R. Mullen Jr, Chief Curator for High Line Art, and presented by High Line.
The High Line is both a non-profit organization and a public park on the West Side of Manhattan. Working, side by side, with communities inside and outside the High Line, it reimagines public spaces to benefit connected and healthy neighborhoods and municipalities.
Visitors can tour its gardens, see art or performances, sample food and drink, or connect with friends and neighbors, all while enjoying a unique perspective of the New York metropolis.
