Rum is considered a rebellious and revolutionary spirit, associated with tropical vacations and colorful cocktails. According to existing records, this spirit is the oldest in history. However, its popularity has not always been the same, and its reputation has changed many times.
Rum is often considered a pirate’s drink. Rum was the spirit of vogue in 1700, so much so that the inhabitants of the North American colonies consumed 3.7 gallons per year per person and were common gifts at election time.
2. Sailors drink
The stereotype of the pirate and rum dates back to the 17th century. However, rum was also present in legal vessels. So much that the British Royal Navy considered it an indispensable element in the portions of the sailors.

It is hard to classify rum since, unlike other spirits, it does not have clear rules of how it should be aged, stored, or produced. A good starting point is the classification of origin by nation. Although, this refers to the former colonial powers.
Spaniards (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Panama). Famous for lighter, slightly aged rums with a sweeter taste, more defined notes, and a cleaner flavor.
English (Barbados, Bermuda, and Jamaica). Dark rums with at least one year of aging and a more pronounced molasses flavor.
French (Haiti, Guadeloupe, and Martinique). With a very distinctive style, these are distilled and fermented in cane juice. To later be aged in cognac barrels for many years.
