Holy Worms! Art and mezcal to support Turkey, an interview with Mauricio Castillo

Reading Time: 2 min.

Mauricio Castillo is a great Mexican plastic artist, actor, writer, and director, distinguished for his sense of humor and appreciated for his charm, charisma, and altruism. Values that were present and that motivated him to participate in the Santo Gusano art auction to benefit the Save the Children programs and those affected by the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey.

How did the opportunity to participate in the Santo Gusano and Save the Children mezcal humanitarian initiative come about?

The invitation was through Casa Vacía in Coyoacán. I will show an exhibit soon in this space. A cultural venue where artists and others present themselves. I have an exhibition with them on March 2, and they were the ones who called me. And I, of course, I join it. I was delighted. They only shared some simple indications, such as respecting the logo, but the theme was free, and so was the technique.

What does Mauricio Castillo think of art and culture spaces like BADA as a plastic artist?

I think they are a great alternative. It’s great because you also have direct contact with the artists, and it’s an opportunity for many people to come to the same space and get to know all the proposals and offers of Mexican art.

What inspired you to intervene in your bottle?

In the different mezcals, the agaves of the mezcals, which, unlike tequila, have an infinite number of agaves that give you different flavors of mezcals. In addition, all the maguey leaves from which the mezcal comes are gorgeous, so that was the first motif, and then in the worms. I thought the Holy Worm was funny, so I set «Holy Worms» on it. As Robin would have said. So I draw wings and their saintly crowns on the worms.

How do you think art helps humanitarian causes like this?

That’s always a great way to do it. It remains to invite more foundations to be encouraged to summon artists, and I am almost sure that one hundred percent will be very invested and will never say no to these things and are capable of donating expensive works and participating in some way in these proposals. So, I believe that there have to be more foundations encouraged to participate and coordinate these efforts to support these causes.
