Since its founding in 1997 in London, The Rug Company has distinguished itself by creating quality craftsmanship and design that revolutionized its industry to establish itself as the world’s leading producer of contemporary handmade rugs. This time the English company, inspired by the charm of the East and joins forces with Guo Pei, the most renowned designer in China, and they present their Opulent Nature collection.

At Opulent Nature, Guo Pei collaborates with The Rug Company to create seven new rugs and cushions inspired by Chinese motifs and a longing for the rich beauty of the past. Drawing on Pei’s experience in the haute couture scene, the collection features meticulous detail, blending elements of fashion, design, and art in an inspiring spectacle.

As a pioneer of haute couture, Pei is known for her dedication to heritage fashion, exquisite embroidery, and a traditionally grand style. This deep devotion has earned Pei the status of Queen of Sewing of China, an appointment as a founding member of the Asian Sewing Federation, and numerous international awards and prizes.

Concerning tradition, each design transcends its beauty by encapsulating the complex history of Chinese culture through the reinterpretation of evocative symbols and motifs.

In a fusion of ancient craftsmanship, Splendor features a royal design on the edges, offering a nod to Pei’s signature embroidery. The intricate pattern rises in a palette of blue silk against the soft wool background.

A sight to behold, Dragon Mist showcases an intricate dragon cloaked in ornate detail and billowing clouds. This design captures a fascinating sense of energy. The entire motif, crafted on a wool base, is woven in golden silk, highlighted with blue accents, nodding to blue and white Chinese porcelain.

Secret Garden combines the most auspicious symbols of China to create a fantasy-inspired motif. In the purest Pei style, this design recalls the grandeur and precision used in tailoring during the rule of the Chinese dynasties. The ornamental illustration is done entirely in silk against the wool background, highlighting the symmetrical design with a sheen.

Tempest Day and Tempest Night play on the symbolism of waves and their emotional capacity to ignite a sense of power and calm. Roaring waves lap at the edge of this design, leaving a center of stillness amongst the chaos. This hypnotic design stands out with accents of silky gold and blue threads that intertwine with water to create a claw-like silhouette against a fleece background.

An adaptation of the prolific and much-commemorated dress worn by Rihanna at the 2015 Met Gala, Empress Gold is a symbol of feminine power. This design has been handcrafted entirely from silk, with a traditional sense of grandeur. Available in two colorways, Empress Gold takes on Pei’s affiliation with yellow and its representation of power and prosperity in Chinese culture. Empress Coral features a color palette of soft greens and pale pinks. Both are expressed through layers of shimmering silk, painstakingly woven to create a regal outfit meant for a queen.

Lion Dance represents Pei’s dedication to tradition, ritual, and craft. Two elegant lions jump on the pastel background, chasing the mythical ball of hydrangeas, which symbolizes wisdom and good fortune. Meticulously handcrafted, this design blends wool and silk through the traditional Aubusson tapestry. Lion Dance is available in two unique colors, the first in a soothing blue and the second in a warm pink.

Opulent Nature designs are woven by the skilled craftsmen at The Rug Company using the finest wool and silk.
