For some years now, thanks to institutions such as the Museum of Popular Art, the work of renowned national and international artists and designers, and other initiatives, the textile work of Mexican artisans is considered textile art. However, it has been three years since it received the local recognition that it has always deserved, and today, this art is homaged in the iconic event at the Los Pinos Cultural Complex, Original 2023.
In its third edition, Original welcomed folk artists from weavers to jewelers to show off a national cultural mosaic to the world. At the opening of the meeting, a traditional ritual of augury and permission took place on the esplanade of the Miguel Alemán House as a prelude to the opening ceremony. In this, representatives of native languages such as Kumiai, Pima, Cora, Nahuatl, and Paipai were present on a catwalk starring the backstrap loom to celebrate living history and traditional crafts.
Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, Secretary of Culture of the Government of Mexico, was present at the meeting; in her speech, she applauded the tenacity of ancestral cultures in the face of adversities such as racism and discrimination.
Original is an event that has become a cultural movement that seeks to raise awareness about the importance of traditional designs and symbols. Since its inception in 2021, it has brought together artisans speaking 31 native languages in a multifaceted space beyond sales and exhibition.
To carry out this meeting, during the year, a journey of more than seventy thousand kilometers takes place to give conferences, provide training and workshops that help the artisan to improve their financial and fiscal knowledge, social networks management, and, above all, increase the valuation of work.
Original is a movement with artisans at the center of it. Each meeting seeks to promote local consumption and combat the nasty practice of haggling. In the 2023 edition, 1,070 artisans from across the republic participated, and they proudly shared, globally, who they are as a community.
In Original 2023, technology was also present with the presence of Google Arts & Culture to bring Mexican textile art closer to 95 countries through Google Crafted in Mexico.
We hope that year after year, this movement continues to grow, and we invite you to follow the Original networks to learn more news.
