On the occasion of the 76th edition of the silver screen and glamour, the Cannes Film Festival, we invite you to discover ten curiosities about the most prestigious award given at this Festival, the Palme d’Or.
- Since 1998 Chopard has been the only jeweler authorized to manufacture the Palme d’Or. And since 2001, the French house has been responsible for creating the Chopard Trophy to celebrate female and male revelations of the cinema world.
- The trophy takes inspiration from the palm trees of the Croisette and the herald of the city of Cannes, which recall that Saint Honore took refuge in a palm tree when a storm drove the snakes away from the Lérins islands. This piece was completely rethought and redesigned by Caroline Scheufele in 1998.
- The original Cannes trophy, before 1998, was made in a small Parisian workshop; it was gold-plated and mounted on a Plexiglas base.
- Today, the impressive Palme d’Or rests on a block of emerald-cut diamond-shaped rock crystal, whose natural inclusions make each piece unique.
- On the occasion of the 70th and 75th anniversary of the Festival and the 25th anniversary of the Festival’s association with Chopard, the Palmes d’Or awards of these editions were dazzled with diamonds.
- As part of the commitment to Sustainable Luxury, since 2014, the Cannes Award has been made using certified Fairmined ethical gold, an artisanal gold extracted responsibly. Today it remains the only Seventh Art award made with this certified precious metal.
- Seventy hours of work are required to carry out the work of producing the supreme award from start to finish.
- To achieve a perfectly homogeneous result, the same jeweler carries out the entire production process of the piece with the help of six artisans who intervene throughout the different stages of its production.
- The Cannes Film Festival is the most media event in the world after the Olympic Games.
- The Palme d’Or continues to be the token of the extraordinary relationship that unites this jeweler with the Cannes Film Festival and shows the world that Chopard Loves Cinema.
