Time and sound of the Day of the Dead, a tribute by Chopard to Mexico and its traditions

Reading Time: 1.4 min.

Colors, flowers, music, joy, and skulls conquer the hearts of the whole world these days. For years, the Day of the Dead and its graphic imagery have inspired artists and creators from the world of art, fashion, music, and of course, the exclusive niche of Haute Horlogerie could not be left behind.

As is tradition, Chopard Manufacture celebrates Mexican culture and presents an edition of watches specially dedicated to this celebration. The jewel in the crown of these pieces is a unique piece of their L.U.C Full Strike minute repeater model, dressed up with Mexican motifs.

The L.U.C Full Strike Dia de Los Muertos is made of 18-carat white ethical gold completely hand-engraved throughout the case and enhanced with a dial embellished with the iconic Calavera plus a bezel set with baguette-cut sapphires.

The Mexican personality of the L.U.C Full Strike Day of the Dead model is present in its unique dial, which ingeniously appropriates the visible elements of the movement to transform them into graphic components. In this way, the hammers of the minute repeater become an eye. In addition, the inertia regulator that defines the rhythm of the chime integrates the Skull’s mustache and contributes to its symmetry, as the concentric power reserve indicator takes the shape of the second eye. The bezel, set with baguette-cut sapphires, surrounds this dead man’s head with a blue halo. And finally, the hand-made etchings on the 18-karat white ethical gold case complete a set dedicated to this feast of the Dead that celebrates, above all, life, memory, and eternity.

The box, its carriage, and handles are greatly etched by the artistic hands of a specialized craftsman in the workshops, with motifs inspired by the Skull. Not a square millimeter has been left unworked by the burin and chisel, leaving an imprint created from skulls, guitars, birds, and skeletons. Exceptional artistry, associated with the precision and the stunning craft of the movement, earned the L.U.C Full Strike, Día de Los Muertos, the recognition of the Hallmark of Geneva.

A popular celebration, joyful, full of life and noise, the Day of the Dead finds a perfect echo in the L.U.C Full Strike model: the music of this party responds to the melody of a unique minute repetition of its kind. Thanks to the LUC 08.01-L caliber, its sapphire timbres produce a sound, unique in the world, of such extraordinary purity and clarity that in 2017 it received the Golden Hand of the Grand Prix de la Horlogerie de Genève.

This piece is unique and extraordinary. An hommage by Chopard to the legendary Mexican watchmaking salon, the SIAR. A magnificent love letter from the manufacture to Mexico and its traditions.
