El Palacio de Hierro, 135 years of luxury and international style in Mexico

Reading Time: 1.3 min.

In 1888 the world’s first movie was filmed, the tire captivated everyone as the most innovative invention, and in Mexico, the doors of the first luxury department store and the first building with an iron structure opened. Since then, and until now, El Palacio de Hierro has been a luxury reference and part of the life of the most demanding Mexicans.

To celebrate its 135th anniversary, El Palacio de Hierro celebrates its trajectory through a museography exhibition divided into four fundamental axes: fashion and style, technology, daily life, and popular culture. Each includes the most representative and iconic of thirteen decades of history and incomparable luxury.

Inside the exhibition are objects from the year 1888 to the present, among which pieces from 3 different museums stand out, as well as garments from the historical archive of the Christian Dior House, Carolina Herrera House, Guerlain House, Kitchen Aid Museum, and iconic tokens of El Palacio de Hierro that will be on display for the first time.

In the same way, five private collections and relevant objects stand special garments by María Félix, garments designed by the French-American fashion designer Oleg Cassini, among many more belonging to brands such as Ferragamo, Tane, Panerai, Montblanc, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Cuisinart, Longines, Miele, Sony, Dyson, Villeroy & Boch, Herman Miller, Rimowa, Max Mara, Scappino, Lego, Hasbro and of course, Barbie.

This tour will be on the Ground Floor inside El Palacio de los Palacios from July 13 to August 13, allowing us to learn about the history of the luxury department store in Mexico through the selection of 135 relevant objects in the history of the retail and fashion by Ana Elena Mallet, curator specializing in modern and contemporary design and the museography care of Joel Aguilar, Director of Exhibitions at the University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC), UNAM.
