With the debut of the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC+, the Affalterbach-based performance brand is doing more than updating one of its flagship SUVs—it is reaffirming the future of the V8. At the heart of the model is the new M177 EVO, an extensively re-engineered 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 developed to meet upcoming emissions standards while preserving the performance DNA that has defined AMG for decades.
The numbers speak for themselves: 612 horsepower, 850 Nm of torque, and a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 3.9 seconds, placing the GLE 63 S among the most capable high-performance SUVs on the market. Complementing the engine is a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), providing additional power, sharper throttle response, smoother starts, and improved efficiency without compromising the unmistakable character of the V8.
One of the most significant engineering upgrades is the introduction of a flat-plane crankshaft, designed to reduce rotating mass and allow the engine to rev more freely while delivering faster, more precise throttle response. Combined with revised fuel injection, optimized intake and exhaust systems, upgraded turbochargers, and advanced emissions technology, the result is a modern V8 engineered for the future without losing its soul.
Performance extends far beyond the powertrain.
The new GLE 63 S features AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension with adaptive damping, AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL active roll stabilization, AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive, and an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential. Together, these systems deliver exceptional agility, stability, and comfort, allowing the SUV to transition seamlessly from long-distance touring to spirited driving at the touch of a button.
The driving experience is further enhanced by the newly developed AMG Performance exhaust system, whose sound can be tailored through multiple driving modes. Whether in Comfort or Sport+, drivers can choose between refined sophistication and the unmistakable soundtrack that has become synonymous with AMG performance.
Visually, the GLE 63 S receives a more commanding presence with a redesigned AMG-specific grille, updated LED lighting signature, larger air intakes, and signature dual exhaust outlets. Inside, premium materials such as Nappa leather, carbon fiber trim, and MICROCUT microfiber reinforce the balance between handcrafted luxury and motorsport-inspired performance. Buyers can further personalize the SUV through MANUFAKTUR, Mercedes-AMG’s bespoke customization program.
