Although art is for everyone, it is a fact that any use of Italy’s publicly owned art to sell merchandise requires permission and the payment of a fee. That is why French fashion house Jean Paul Gaultier is facing a lawsuit from Italy’s Uffizi Gallery after some of its pieces in the «Le Musée» collection reproduced the work of Sandro Botticelli
The Uffizi Gallery sues Jean Paul Gaultier for using the artwork The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli. The artist’s masterpiece was painted in the 1480s and over 530 years ago.
Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli’s Birth of Venus can be seen on items such as a tank top and flared pants. Jean Paul Gaultier could pay up to $100,000 in damages for unauthorized commercial use that violates Italy’s Cultural Heritage Code.
Jean Paul Gaultier has since removed the articles from his site. However, other retailers still have them available; meanwhile, the museum is working with the designer house to reach a deal for the commercial use of the artwork.
