Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is considered one of the most outstanding works of universal music. Nearly three centuries after its creation, this piece moves audiences in the contemporary ballet The Passion at Chapultepec Castle, presented by La Infinita Compañía under the direction and choreography of Rodrigo González.

The Passion joins the 2025 Xalapa Sacred Music and Art Festival as a Mexico City venue. Set at Chapultepec Castle, the staging fuses contemporary dance with minimalist theatrical and stage elements, offering a unique and innovative experience for the audience near the context of Holy Week.

With a choreographic proposal that combines contemporary dance, classical ballet, and Butoh, The Passion achieves an abstraction of the original text, allowing the narrative to live through movement.

The director of the Varsovia Theater emphasizes that, although the piece takes inspiration from a biblical story, his intention is not to create a religious act but to offer a universal artistic expression accessible to all audiences.

Employing stage minimalism, the production dispenses with large sets to focus on space and light to generate atmospheres that enhance the emotional charge of the play. The choreographic proposal incorporates theatrical codes to make dance a clear and immersive narrative tool, thus achieving a unique fusion of stage languages.

The piece invites reflection, self-knowledge, and individual and collective responsibility. A cast of renowned performers brings this dance version of «The Passion» to life: Javier Moreno, Domingo Rubio, Montserrat Payró, Yaroslav Villafuerte, Ulises González, Alan Huerta, José Ortiz, Pamela Grimaldo, Ana Paula Ricalde, Paulina del Carmen, Carlos Coronel, and Álvaro Pérez.

Next, April 26th and 27th will be the last opportunity to enjoy this production during this season. Tickets are available at the box office and Ticketmaster.
