A new opportunity for fashion and the planet with the Decathlon Upcycling line

Since 1976 Decathlon has stood as a French company inspired by the democratization of sport. Today, Decathlon stands out by its environmental commitment and is present in more than 70 countries. Through its new initiative and line of sustainable clothing Upcycling in partnership with CROM-D, Decathlon presents a new line of sustainable Upcycling clothing for more responsible production.

This Upcycling project seeks to recycle textile materials of Mexican production, fated for destruction, to create a new unique, unrepeatable garment. The recycled materials come from Decathlon Mexico’s local production of textiles with factory defects destined for destruction.

The new garments are designed by the Crom-D fashion organization and made by hand by women artisans from the Iztapalapa mayor’s office through a fair trade scheme. In a short time, this line has become one of Decathlon’s flagship projects in terms of sustainability.

The objectives of Decathlon x CROM-D are to avoid product waste, recover and transform defective products not sold by Decathlon, collaborate with a local workshop to give women job opportunities, and raise awareness among customers about the circular economy.

The project means recycling new parts with some factory defects from Mexican production exported to the US, Canada, Chile, Colombia, and Uruguay. The garments with these defects cannot be for sale, so those get collected from Decathlon’s Mexican suppliers that manufacture textiles for brands such as Kalenji, Domyos, and Olaïan, from which the collection comes.

There are 500 pieces available for this collection, among which consumers will choose between bikers, skirts, long-sleeved shirts, and short-sleeved shirts in different color combinations.

This initiative seeks to help to improve the environment as a way of caring for our playing field, the planet.
