MAP Friends Gala and 25 years of love for Mexican popular art

Reading Time: 1.8 min.

To celebrate 25 years of promoting and recognizing the best of Mexican Popular Art, the association of Friends of Popular Art MAP convened a gala to celebrate this anniversary. It was an extraordinary event that featured the participation of the Mexican tenor Fernando de la Mora and the singer and composer Rodrigo de la Cadena, hosted by the actress and presenter Rebecca de Alba.

During the event, Marina Núñez Bespalova, Undersecretary of Cultural Development, in representation of the Ministry of Culture of Mexico, emphasized the importance of Popular Art as a cultural treasure of the nation and recognized several of the master artisans who gathered at the venue to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the AmigosMAP Association, such as master Pedro Matsuga Pimentel, accompanied by his wife, Diana Amelia Hernández.

Mercedes Vigil, President of the Association, recognized that Mexican popular art is a cultural legacy that belongs to everyone. She recalled that AmigosMAP germinated from an idea to become what it is today. With a clear vision to preserve and promote the popular art of Mexico and a heart full of passion, her dedication and commitment inspire all of us. Today, her legacy lives on in each work of art housed at the MAP. Likewise, she highlighted the invaluable work of Marie Thérèse Hermand de Arango in constructing what the Museum and Amigos MAP represent today.

In addition, the Michoacan Master Craftsman Antonio Cornelio participated and thanked the support MAP Friends provides to thousands of artisans in Mexico. Paula Arango, daughter of Marie Thérèse – and a fundamental part of preserving her mother’s legacy – and Walther Boelsterly, Museum Director.

Founded by Marie Thérèse Hermand de Arango on April 21, 1999, the Association of Friends of the Popular Art Museum’s star objective is to preserve the traditions and artisanal techniques that are a living testimony of the cultural identity of our country. All proceeds from the event benefited the board to support Mexican artisans through MAP.
