Indian rugs are an impressive treasure that brings life and sophistication to spaces. Thanks to their stunning elaboration and attention to detail, these have become a symbol of Oriental millenary art and tradition. Their colorful designs – handcrafted in family looms – elevate any space with style and sophistication, and thanks to the talent of a pair of brilliant Guadalajara sisters, today it is possible to customize them and find them in the most prestigious commercial area of Mexico City, in the new Mughal boutique, located in the heart of Polanco, where we got to discover what exists behind a handmade rug from India.

The personality and warmth that an elegant high-end handmade rug brings to a space is the product of the encounter between the thousand-year-old tradition of workshops in India with the ingenuity and freshness of Mexican design talent, and the result is simply spectacular. For ten years, the sisters Ana and Eli Tessada, founders of Mughal, have captivated the Mexican market from their branches in Guadalajara and San Ángel, with impressive pieces and unique creations handcrafted in their workshops located in India to guarantee unsurpassed care in the quality of the final product.

All the Mughal pieces are designed by them and their design team, in addition to prime collaborations such as the one made with the graphic artist Ricardo Luévanos, an artist from Guadalajara who stands out for his pieces inspired by nature.

Mughal currently has an extensive catalog of more than 1000 products in which you can find hand-knotted rugs, kilims, jute, outdoor line, and special collections.

Each piece is woven in a handmade process, tied with a Tibetan knot. Processing begins with the selection of fibers. For this, fibers such as tensile, New Zealand wool, and different ones are selected and dyed in an artisan process that guarantees durability and sustainability to reduce a negative environmental impact.

Mughal rugs can be customized, and their palette has over 1,400 colors. 100% customizable and custom designs, although they currently have four base sizes that adapt very well to different spaces.

In India, they have looms in which they have employed local families for years. To create their designs, Mughal gives the artisans a map of the piece to guide them and know what tonality to add, where the knot goes, the fiber, and much more.

A large rug takes approximately one to two months in its artisan elaboration process. It is a job made between two people. Once woven, the piece is washed and left to dry in the sun to guarantee its natural shine. This process requires patience and a bit of luck, depending on nature in a place with a climate as surprising as this distant land. Respecting this part of the process is one of the guarantees that Mughal offers to ensure the quality of its pieces.

Later it is time to shave. The entire piece gets treated according to the desired texture and shape; before proceeding with carving to differentiate textures in the design. At the end comes the binding process. Fundamental to uniting each of the independent knots of the hand-woven rug.

Creating a Mughal bespoke piece can last up to five months; each piece is handmade with an ancestral technique in which each part of the process is respected, in addition to considering shipping times. It is worth the wait because each piece is handmade and unique.

Mughal currently has more than seven collections, in addition to collaborations with artists and designers and bespoke pieces, in which shape, size, and design are limited by your imagination.

In addition to opening their new boutique in Polanco, Mughal is preparing a spectacular piece to present in the next edition of Design Week. We will remain pending to learn more about this proudly traditional brand.
