The new hand-wound caliber 2974 has required all the skeletonization expertise of the Audemars Piguet engineering, watchmaking, and craftsmanship team to create a watch like this.
By reducing the structure of the watch to the bare minimum, they have achieved a level of transparency that shows the character in a three-dimensional silhouette as if suspended in a vacuum through the sapphire crystal. The shape and volume of the beloved heroes have been previously cut out of a block of white gold using a CNC machine. Next, the hero’s suit has been laser-engraved to obtain the different textures that give it its textile appearance. This operation requires complex machinery programming and multiple tests to achieve the desired result. Once this step is complete, the touch-ups and finishes related to the engraving are handmade by a single artisan to make each piece unique.
Finally, the character is handpainted to give it its unmistakable two-tone aesthetic, with the contrast of matt red and metallic blue. At this stage, the painter stands out the shadows and contrasts to give Spider-Man more perspective. Arranged along the entire thickness of the watch, the figure of the superhero alone requires a minimum of 50 hours of work, stretching the limits of the unique skills of Le Brassus artisans.
The dial features alternating black PVD-coated gold indices and Arabic numerals with superimposed black PVD-coated hands. They all have a polished finish and a white luminescent coating that turns blue in the dark, in a subtle reference to the Spider-Man universe.
This model, limited to 250 pieces, is accompanied by a unique timepiece called the Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Black Suit Spider-Man. This one-of-a-kind timepiece comes in a white gold case decorated with a spider leg motif. First, the compartment is laser-engraved to create the spider legs, filled with luminescent hybrid ceramic. The result is polished and exquisitely laser-engraved again to form the web in the background. This lesser-known representation of the character makes the piece unique and more mysterious, such as the luminescent material on the hands, indices, and a part of the character that turns green in the dark.
The exclusive Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Black Suit Spider-Man features a velvet-textured black rubber strap and a second strap in black woven-effect calfskin with white stitching.
Audemars Piguet is now auctioning off its unique Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Black Suit Spider-Man watch, among other lots. All auction proceeds will go to First Book and Ashoka.
