The Veracruz-born artist brings together abstract painting and contemporary jewelry in an exhibition inspired by minerals, color and the natural world. The show remains open through November 29, 2026.
Indra Ortíz’s fascination with gemstones and minerals began with her earliest explorations in jewelry design. Today, that same universe extends into her paintings, where color, texture and abstraction reveal new ways of interpreting the material world.
The artist has presented Destellos Minerales, an exhibition bringing together abstract painting and jewelry design at the Ágora de la Ciudad in Xalapa, Veracruz, on view through November 29, 2026.
Opening on September 18 and welcoming more than 200 attendees, according to the organizers, the exhibition is supported by the Veracruz Ministry of Culture and explores the relationship between two disciplines that have shaped Ortíz’s creative journey.
From Gemstones to Canvas
Before turning to painting, Indra Ortíz found her first artistic language in metals and semiprecious stones. Her curiosity about their properties gradually evolved into an abstract visual vocabulary informed by their colors, structures and transformations.
In Destellos Minerales, references to amber, ruby, emerald and opal emerge through compositions in which material, layered color and texture take center stage.
For curator Helue Nocedal, this relationship is an exercise in exploration and translation. Rather than simply depicting minerals, Ortíz reinterprets their qualities through a visual language in which painting and jewelry engage in an ongoing dialogue.
This approach also emerged during Ortíz’s conversation with Statement Media, when she explained that she likes gemstones to remain open to interpretation, allowing viewers to recognize them—or not.
Her work is less concerned with reproducing a stone as it appears in nature than with exploring the visual and emotional possibilities that emerge when it is seen from another perspective.
