Many have asked what art is for, only to receive countless answers; you could say that it is almost impossible to discern right and wrong. That is to say, art can serve to move, educate, raise awareness, communicate, surprise, decorate, and many more responses; for some cynics, perhaps not at all. In art, some samples and exhibitions invite us to enjoy ourselves, others that appeal to reflection, and even those that stimulate our senses and elevate us to live an emotional and visceral experience. Such is the case of the exhibition New Spot Paintings & A Hundred Years by artist Damien Hirst at the Hilario Galguera Gallery in Mexico City, open to the public from the beginning of April until July 12.
The exhibition presents more than twenty-five works, including a selection of new Spot Paintings from 2022, along with his most iconic installations, including A Hundred Years, 1990, I Want to Spend the Rest of My Life Everywhere, with Everyone, One to One, Always, Forever, Now, 1991.
Hirst’s Spot Paintings first appeared in 1986 and are recognized for their colorful dots arranged in different patterns. Each painting has a unique title, often taken from a chemical catalog. What began as experimental hand-painted stains evolved into a refined process, embracing the chance of color correlations and their infinite variations.
The installation A Hundred Years from 1990 is challenging and invites the viewer into a contemplative space where the transitory nature of existence lies within a glass biosystem. A swarm of flies navigates a labyrinth of mortality inside a two-compartment glass box, symbolizing life’s fragility and its decisions.
The exhibition will remain open to the public until July 12 at the Hilario Galguera Gallery, located at Francisco Pimentel number 3 in the San Rafael neighborhood of Mexico City. Do not miss it.
