Zagato presents the first of five Maserati-powered Mostro Barchettas

Reading Time: 1 min.

Seven years ago, Zagato introduced the Mostro, a Maserati-powered supercar inspired by the racing cars of the 1950s. Now, it is ready not only to present, but to deliver, the first customer car of its short limited edition of the Mostro Barchetta, or simply, a roadster version of the coupe.

The Mostro takes its name from a car that Sir Stirling Moss called a monster like the 1957 Maserati 450S Coupe Zagato. About the project, Zagato president Andrea Zagato said, We decided on the name of the inspiring Sir Stirling First reaction of Moss. Who said: ‘Beautiful as a monster’ when he first saw the Maserati Coupé. It is the oxymoron itself that expresses well the union between brutal power and the philosophy of beauty.

Throughout the car’s design, you’ll find nods to racing heritage. Two bucket seats and a small, raked wraparound windshield are reminiscent of a speedboat. While a Maserati-made carbon-fiber MonoCell chassis, lacking electronic traction control and a block-mounted front gearbox, are all racing cars.

You can choose between a 414 BHP 4.2-litre Maserati V8 or a 621 BHP 3-litre Maserati V6 found in Maserati’s current flagship, the MC20. This works with perfect 50-50 weight distribution, rear-wheel drive, AP Racing six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, a six-speed sequential gearbox, double-wishbone front, and rear suspensions, adjustable shock absorbers, and a tan combined weight of just 1,200kg. In short, the Mostro Barchetta is meant to be a competent car on the road and track.

Only five will be built, and almost all of them are already assigned to Zagato’s collector client list. This beauty was present at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
