Numerous pieces of art that have appeared in Ukraine have led experts to believe that the elusive graffiti artist Banksy could be in the war-torn country, and this week, Banksy confirmed that at least one is officially his.
A series of murals have appeared in Borodyanka, a town near Kyiv, depicting everything from two children using a metal tank trap as a seesaw to one implying that Russian President Vladimir Putin as being defeated in a judo match against a child. However, this is not the one that Banksy confirmed is his; instead, they chose to highlight a work that depicts a gymnast in a leotard doing a handstand on a pile of rubble.
The artwork stands on the side of a destroyed building of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Of particular note is that Borodyanka was one of the first towns to be badly hit by Russian forces in the first weeks of the war, making the artwork all the more poignant.
The Guardian reports that the city has since been liberated and is now under reconstruction.
Once again, it is clear that the opposite of war is not peace but creation.
