Hermand de Arango Collection at the MAP, a life of love and admiration for popular art

Reading Time: 2 min.

Only three months after the unfortunate death of the founder of the Museum of Popular Art (MAP), Mrs. Marie Thérèse Hermand de Arango, an incredibly talented, visionary, and eternal lover of popular art, the opening of the temporary exhibition Colección Hermand de Arango took place on Saturday, April 1. An exquisite collection with a myriad of original pieces from all across Mexico. Evidence of the love of a great woman for art and the folk artists of Mexico.

Madame Marie Thérèse was always captivated by art in all its forms. In the collection, you will find unique pieces of incomparable techniques, fantastic creations in bone, wax, and other natural materials, Talavera in intense and luminous tones, extraordinary textiles, trees of life, and exquisite techniques such as straw and plumage. These and others are part of the mosaic of joy and know-how shared in each piece.

When the philanthropist and lover of popular art and jacarandas arrived in Mexico, she found a culture similar to that of a family and lovely weather in a legendary country. She adapted effortlessly and discovered that Mexico and her native Egypt share fantastic qualities such as warmth, friendliness, and hospitality.

In the 1970s, she married Mr. Manuel Arango Arias, who comes from a family of businessmen distinguished for their philanthropic projects, and part of large renowned patronages in Mexico and abroad.

Touring the country and meeting and recognizing folk artists and their communities was always a primary mission that the great Marie Thérèse fulfilled with pleasure. Upon meeting the considered mother of all Mexican artisans, the teacher María Teresa Pomar – who over time became a great friend – shared the dream of creating a museum to surprise the world with the creative capacity of the Mexican artisan.

In the temporary exhibition Colección Hermand de Arango, the MAP shares a thoughtful and emotional tribute in which they share with the visitor a sample of the noble and tireless work that, with great affection, tenacity, and selflessly, Mrs. Marie Thérèse Hermand developed de Arango to exalt, support and promote in Mexico and the world, the cultural and artistic essence of Mexican Folk Art…Art of the people, hands of God.

The Hermand de Arango collection is presented from April 1 to September 3, 2023, in the Temporary Exhibition Hall of the MAP.

Do not miss the opportunity to visit it and be surprised.
