Fortunately, in 2025, professionalization in the romance industry finally has an instrument of official validity before a government agency.
In recent years, event planning has positioned itself as a multi-million-dollar industry. Unfortunately, this has led to the proliferation of individuals willing to enrich themselves at the expense of their client’s dreams without guaranteeing results.
CONOCER, the National Council for the Standardization and Certification of Labor Competencies, comprised of the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Labor, and the Ministry of Public Education, is the institution responsible for this essential work.
Organizing an event and bringing it to a successful conclusion involves countless people, but mostly, it requires expertise in diverse areas. Given a recent wave of public complaints on social media and in the media that reveal a romance industry lacking regulation, information, and training—complaints that are not a new issue but are only now coming to light due to the ease of reporting—it was imperative to take action.
MEPA (Mexican Event Planner Academy), which has been fighting for discipline and structure in this industry for years, has finally achieved, through CONOCER, the creation of a certification that dictates the way of doing things and protects a romance industry that is constantly growing, as Mexico becomes an increasingly attractive destination for the foreign market, where instilling trust and confidence in clients is no longer a question, nor could it be a project that had to wait.
Mexican Event Planner Academy was founded in 2016 by Oscar Mejía and is the first event and wedding academy in Mexico to begin providing information about the tools offered by CONOCER and to create the first wedding certification endorsed by CONOCER. This certification furnishes reach and implementation at the federal level and is globally recognized in all countries with which Mexico has treaties, thus setting a precedent in the romance industry.
