In the heart of downtown Mexico City, Hotel Balcón del Zócalo becomes a symbolic portal between worlds. To celebrate the Day of the Dead, the hotel presents “TRASCENDER”, an artistic, ceremonial, and sensorial experience that reimagines the journey to the Mictlán — the Aztec underworld — as a tribute to memory, life, and transformation.

From October 25 to November 3, the hotel’s iconic balcony overlooking the Zócalo transforms into a breathtaking altar of color and meaning. More than 60,000 marigolds, along with thousands of crimson and purple blooms, create a monumental installation that bridges the realms of the living and the departed.

A Collective Tribute to Memory and Renewal
“TRASCENDER” is far more than a visual spectacle — it is a collective work of art. Eight florists, eight farmers, six papier-mâché artists, designers, producers, and craftsmen joined forces to bring to life a symbolic path inspired by the nine levels of the Mictlán, reinterpreted through contemporary art and spirituality.

Every detail — from the marigold pathways to the sculptures of Mictlantecuhtli, the god of the underworld — holds deep meaning. The installation took four days and three nights to complete, the result of a collaboration that honors the earth, life cycles, and the transformative power of remembrance.
“TRASCENDER is an invitation to pause, look, remember, and give thanks,” says Alfonso Martínez, Corporate Director of Central Hoteles. “We want each visitor to feel the connection between art, nature, and memory — to discover that celebrating those who are no longer with us is also a celebration of life.”

A Sensory Experience with the Flavor of Mexico
Complementing the installation, Hotel Balcón del Zócalo presents two exclusive gastronomic experiences that celebrate the richness of Mexican culture:

“Noche de Alebrijes” – a dinner that honors the creativity and color of Mexico through dishes inspired by the fantastical shapes of alebrijes.
“Ánimas & Catrinas Experience” – an elegant evening of haute cuisine and signature cocktails, paying tribute to the grace and mystery of the Day of the Dead.
Each menu is a sensory journey that combines local ingredients, ancestral flavors, and modern techniques — an homage to memory through taste, scent, and emotion.
