Carlos Rivera and Santo Gusano Honor Life and Memory with a Día de Muertos Limited-Edition Mezcal

Reading Time: 2 min.

In Tlaxcala, surrounded by marigold petals, candlelit shadows, and an altar scented with copal and remembrance, Carlos Rivera unveiled a mezcal that pays tribute to Mexico’s most intimate celebration: Día de Muertos. More than a product launch, the evening became a ritual.

Hosted at Casa Huamantla, the space transformed—just for one night—into a sanctuary for those who believe that remembering is also a form of celebrating. There, Rivera introduced the Día de Muertos Special Edition from Mezcal Santo Gusano, crafted from young espadín agave and distilled with seasonal fruits and wild herbs. Only 500 hand-numbered bottles exist, conceived as true collector’s pieces.

A Tasting that Felt Like a Ceremony

The experience brought together close collaborators, creators, and friends of the project for a guided tasting led by renowned Agave Sommelier Lala Noguera, who broke down the subtleties and intention behind the spirit. More than discussing notes and methods, the session connected the mezcal to Rivera’s latest musical project, “Vida,” where memory and emotional continuity take center stage.

Notable attendees included Pei Garza, Alfredo Arnaud, Matías Vega, Carlotta Herrera, Rafa Orozco, Carla Banda, Saúl Angulo, Pía Martínez, and Adolfo de la Fuente, who joined a collective toast “to those who always walk with us.” The gesture, far from ceremonial routine, captured the symbolic essence of the night.

A Mezcal That Carries Its Origins

Santo Gusano’s philosophy remains unwavering: to honor the land and the artisans who shape each bottle. Originating from San Dionisio Ocotepec, Tlacolula, Oaxaca, the brand is rooted in fully handcrafted production and in distillates that express their terroir with clarity.

The special edition opens with subtle citrus and cooked agave on the nose; offers a crystalline appearance; and reveals a flavor profile blending mandarin, lime, and orange with a hint of mint and hierbabuena. The result is a mezcal that embraces the festive, the mystical, and the deeply personal aspects of Día de Muertos.

An Object of Desire

Beyond its craftsmanship, the bottle was designed as a vessel for emotion—a reminder that life and absence can coexist in harmony. A piece meant not just to be collected, but to be experienced.

The Día de Muertos Special Edition will be available for a limited time through the brand’s online store.
